What is Shift?

Shift is a teen driver safety program created by Erie Insurance. The objective of the program is to raise awareness about teen driver safety, and encourage teens to practice and share messages about safe driving. In addition to the contest, JoinTheShift.org offers teens a valuable resource of driver safety information, tools, and tips.

Who can win prizes?

Prizes are awarded to eligible schools and students with the most points. For more information about prizes, check out the points and prizes page.

How do I earn points?

Basically, everything you do on the Shift is an opportunity to earn points. You earn points by:

  • Signing up for Shift
  • Taking the Shift pledge
  • Clicking the Facebook icon so you can share the safe driving message
  • Sharing on Twitter

For more information about earning points, check out the points and prizes page.

When can I earn points?

You can earn points between September 11, 2017, at 5:00 P.M. ET and October 20, 2017, at 4:59 P.M. ET. Points are only awarded when the contest is active. But you can view and download safety content any time you want.

How is the winning school determined?

Determining a school's score is fairly straightforward. A school must have a minimum of 20 eligible students participating to be eligible for prizes. One first prize is awarded to the school with the highest score. The school receiving the second highest score will receive the School Second Prize and the school receiving the next highest score will receive the School Third Prize.

For detailed information on how we determine school score, please see our explanation of scoring in the Official Rules.

What are the prizes?

Each year there is a new contest, and the prizes are different every year. For this year’s prizes see the points and prizes page.

Why is this driver safety message so important for teens?

According to the Centers for Disease Control, more teen drivers are involved in car crashes every year, and more are killed, than any other group. Car crashes take the lives of six teens a day. Many of these crashes, injuries, and deaths can be prevented, as they are caused by common behaviors among teen drivers—like driving distracted, not wearing a seat belt or driving under the influence of alcohol. By raising awareness of these dangers, and encouraging teens to share messages about safe driving, Erie Insurance hopes to help reduce the number of crashes involving teens every year.
